Word of the Year: MOVE
2013 is off to a GREAT start! On New Year's Day, JD and I ran the Commitment Day 5k at Ford Field in Detroit.
JD absolutely killed it and I am very happy with my time {this was not a timed race but I kept track on my Nike+ Running app on my phone} considering I didn't do ANY physical activity in the month of December. JD says she's never running again but she hasn't quit talking about the race and she's worn her race t-shirt every day since. In addition to the t-shirt we also received fitness journals! Mine will be my bible this year.
I kept the endorphin streak going last night and returned to my BodyWorks + Abs class last night at LA Fitness. I think our instructor was punishing us for slacking off over the holidays because it was TOUGH. Not just tough because I've been a complete sack of laziness for a month but much more intense than usual. Needless to say, every muscle in my body hurts today so it will take a lot of effort to drag my butt to the gym tonight {but I WILL do it!}.
In addition to my normal New Year's resolution to get off my butt and move more I've signed up for two programs to keep me inspired and accountable: The #ChillyChallenge {I'm on #TeamGiraffe - join us!} and Best Body Bootcamp. The #ChillyChallenge is an online challenge to move as much as possible in the month of January. There are two teams: #TeamGiraffe and #TeamEscapades and there are loads of great prizes to win. Just a fun way to start the year off right and get off the couch during this blah {and cold!} month.
I also signed up for Tina Reale's Best Body Bootcamp. Bootcamp starts January 7 and I have to admit, I'm a little scared! It is an eight week program adapted for all fitness levels and geared to improving your lifestyle. Tina emails you your workouts every week, there's a Facebook group for support and there's prizes to win here, too!
Another challenge that intrigued me {but there is no way I could ever log this kind of mileage} is the Run This Year challenge to run 2,013 miles in 2013. That's an average of 5.5 miles each day. I'll never be able to do that {not this year, any way} but I'm looking forward to seeing how the participants do and also keeping a close track of my mileage this year to see where I fit in.
Normally I follow the Whole Living 28 Day Mind & Body Challenge in January, but since I'm ramping up my training I don't think it's a good idea to do a detox right now. I am absolutely changing my eating habits so I haven't given up on it completely, but eating nothing but fruits, veggies and nuts for the first week doesn't go along with increased mileage and physical activity. I ate nothing but fruits, veggies and nuts yesterday for breakfast and lunch and I was starved by the time my BodyWorks class started. By the time it was over I was ready to eat a barbell. I am giving up alcohol for the month of January {I did it last year and it was totally worth it} and focusing very closely on my nutrition. I'm hoping to notice some very positive changes in my body come February 1.
Yep, 2013 is the year that I will run a half marathon! My race schedule is changing a bit {two races were canceled and the half that I planned on running is already full} but it's on like Donkey Kong! I'll be starting Hal Higdon's Half Marathon Training Plan beginning February 25 {just as Bootcamp is wrapping up - talk about perfect timing!} and I am so excited to see how far I can push myself.
Here's to setting goals and realizing dreams in 2013!

YAY (for all the things in your post) - but so exciting about your 1/2 marathon commitment. Hal's program is really great, I don't think you can go wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you're doing a lot of things to stay on track. I hope January is as successful as you want it to be! Doing the Commitment 5k was a good way to start (that journal looks so cool). I couldn't haul my lazy (and slightly hungover) butt out of bed on Jan 1, so I am slowly getting back into the workout groove :)
Thankfully, the race didn't start until 11:00. Had it been 8:00 am I might be telling a different story...
