Stepping It Up & Zoning Out

I’ve challenged myself to really put in the work and knock out some strong workouts this week.  Last week was a little lame {plus I’m in panic mode for Sunday’s race} so I need to make up a little ground.

Schedule:

  • Monday – Run {2 miles}
  • Tuesday – Strength
  • Wednesday – BodyWorks + Run {1-2 miles}
  • Thursday – Strength + Run {2-3 miles}
  • Friday – Rest
  • Saturday – Run {1-3 miles} + Barre3
  • Sunday – Race {4 miles}

Yes, I know you aren’t supposed to run the day before a race, but I can’t run Friday and I don’t want to go two days without running before the race.  I’m also adding a plank every day as well as squats, push ups and sit-ups.  For the squats, push ups and sit ups I’m using the Runtastic apps to keep track and my goal is to do at least one more each day.  I joined Erica’s Killer Core Plank Challenge to keep me motivated with planking.  We’ll see how this goes.

Yesterday was a good day: I ate well {under my calorie goal for the day!} and hit the gym for 2.26 miles in 26:32.  I kept upping the pace through the whole run {starting with a 3.5 warmup and ending at 6.0} and I felt pretty good!  Music doesn’t really do much for me when I’m running {I’m weird, I know} and I watch the TVs at the gym but with no sound it’s hard to focus.

Side note: does anyone know how to get the sound on the TVs at the gym?  There are numbers taped to the bottom of each TV which appear to be radio frequencies, but who has a handheld radio these days?  Is there an app that will pick these up?

Last night I listened to a few podcasts while I ran and I was able to zone out and not stare at the time and distance on the treadmill like I normally do.  This was a huge help to me and really made the time and miles go by faster.  I’m thinking about trying an audio book to see how that works for me.

When I got home I stretched out using Kara Goucher’s stretches on NTC then did my squats, push ups and sit ups.

Do you run to music?  If you listen to podcasts, which ones do you like?  Ever run listening to a book?

  1. Download the Run Like a Mother podcasts - they are freaking HILARIOUS and full of good info.

    As for not running the day before a race - that's a total myth. A short 1-2 mile run can actually be really good at keeping your legs loose for the next day. Same goes for running the day after a race or long run. If you feel up to it and aren't injured, go for it. It can actually keep some of the post race soreness away.

    Good luck on Sunday!

  2. You totally can run the day before a race! If I'm doing a 1/2 marathon, I'll do a two mile run the day before. It's legit.

    I have no idea how to work TVs at the gym. I always use my iPod, and I don't do podcasts or anything like that. I'm not very adventurous and I rarely update my iPod... now I feel really lame.

    1. So glad it's OK to run the day before! I'm running the race solo now {running buddy is sidelined with an IT band injury} so I really want to make sure I don't die out there.

  3. IF you're doing push-ups, join our challenge! Doesn't matter how you get them done; if you're doing "real" push-ups, make sure to check in with us on Mondays!

    1. I'm scared. I do girly pushups. My upper body strength is non-existent. Dare I?

  4. If I'm running by myself, I have music going. If I have a partner, I'm too busy talking to listen to music!

    I always think a couple of miles the day before a race is good.... keeps me ready, I think.

    1. I absolutely cannot talk when I run. Not a single word. I'm afraid if I don't conserve every bit of oxygen possible I might suffocate.

  5. To hear the tv at the gym, you have to plug your earbuds into the headphone jack. Look for the little headphone icon on the display. Happy running!

    1. What headphone jack? On the TV? The TVs are hanging from the ceiling so that can't be it. I'm missing something.
